The costs incurred in a legal matter fall into two categories - costs and disbursements.
Costs are the amounts you pay for the work your lawyer does, for example drafting documents, advising you, or appearing in Court. Costs are charged according to an hourly rate, a statutory scale or a fixed fee.
The total costs and disbursements you could incur depend on a number of factors, including the approach of the other party and their lawyer, whether or not your matter involves Court proceedings, and the instructions you decide to provide to us.
You will be provided with specific information about the actions you can take that will help you contain your total legal expenses.
Disbursements are amounts paid to other organisations or individuals - for example Court filing fees, your barrister's fees and government fees for title searches. You will be advised of the amount for any disbursement before you incur any disbursement charges.
